About the Workshop

  • Philosophy

Your tour guide — Doug Hansgate — will measure his success with your success. This is Doug's second home backyard, where he spends a great deal of time, and he wants to do everything he can to help you get the most out of the tour and go home with spectacular images.

With that said, I won't be constantly looking over your shoulder. When I focus on these spots, I prefer to wander a bit, searching for a unique perspective, seeking out calm waters, and experimenting with lighting and composition. I suggest you do the same, but rest assured, I'm not too distant to offer any help you may need. And with only 6 participants on the tour, you're guaranteed personalized attention.

  • Kayaking Optional

This year, I'm introducing a boat-only option for those who might find kayaking in the swamps a bit daunting. Our 24-foot pontoon boat, complete with all the necessary gear, is at your service. You can stay aboard while we navigate to the most picturesque spots. Of course, if you prefer, kayaks will still be an option.

  • Master Class Instruction - Lagniappe

Lagniappe (Which is Cajun meaning “A little something extra”)

With over four decades behind the lens and fifteen years dedicated to teaching, Doug Hansgate brings a wealth of experience to the table. His daily workshop sessions, spanning three to four hours each, are devoted to refining your captured images and imparting cutting-edge post-production techniques. For many, the educational value alone justifies the workshop's cost.

  • Skill Level

Photographers of all skill levels are welcome, whether you're a seasoned expert or just starting out. There's ample room for creativity, regardless of your proficiency. For those keen on enhancing their skills, private lessons with Doug Hansgate are available before or after the tour. Doug's exceptional teaching abilities and knack for simplifying complex concepts lead to rapid improvement. These lessons must be arranged in advance to avoid scheduling conflicts, but those who take advantage of them will find it time well invested.

  • Equipment

During this journey, you'll have the opportunity to utilize various focal length lenses, and we'll provide a detailed list prior to departure. It's advisable to bring at least a wide-angle lens and a zoom lens in the 70-300mm or 100-400mm range. Many of the captivating images captured amidst the cypress will benefit from a zoom lens. Additionally, we often employ extenders to achieve our desired compositions. Typically, our kit includes lenses such as a 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 100-400mm, and an extender, all conveniently stored in a waterproof bag. While not always necessary, these accessories can greatly enhance your photographic experience.

For most shots, handheld shooting from inside the kayak will suffice. However, in certain situations where longer exposures are desired, a tripod will be indispensable. Some of the striking images featured in our impressive slideshow were taken with the tripod submerged in the water while I remained in the kayak.

  • What to Wear

Think layers! Our weather here is quite changeable. While it's technically winter during our photo tour, don't be surprised if you find yourself in shorts and a t-shirt even in December. Our winters are exceptionally mild, so you'll likely only need a fleece at most, but it's wise to be prepared. Additionally, pack some lightweight rain gear; fog, mist, or a light sprinkle are common occurrences during your stay. We embrace the photographic possibilities each weather condition presents, unless safety concerns arise due to high winds or lightning.

  • Kayaking and Fitness

We utilize Native Ultimates kayaks renowned for their exceptional stability, making them ideal for photography. Featuring a comfortable webbed chair with an adjustable backrest, these kayaks ensure a pleasant experience. Whether you're a seasoned kayaker or a first-timer, rest assured, we provide comprehensive instructions and tailor each kayak to your specific needs. You'll be assigned your kayak, paddle, and life jacket for the duration of the workshop.

Launching and disembarking from the kayaks are assisted by myself or my staff—no self-launching or disembarking is permitted to ensure safety. Our mobility with kayaks allows us to explore various locations throughout the day, but there's no rush; you can paddle at your own pace. We now offer a boat-only option for those who prefer not to kayak, guaranteeing access to fantastic locations via our fully equipped 24-foot pontoon boat. In terms of fitness level, easy would likely be the most suitable answer.

While we typically assist with exiting kayaks, there are instances, under favorable conditions, where you may dismount with guidance from our guides. Factors like water level and the softness of the bottom dictate feasibility, and ensuring a safe re-entry point is crucial. If this experience is on your agenda, simply bring your waders, and we'll gladly capture that iconic shot of you standing amidst the magnificent cypress for your portfolio.

We handle all kayak transportation and have them prepared at our launch points upon your arrival.

  • Daily Schedule

Our daily excursions are tailored to optimize the finest light, ambiance, hues, and subject matter. Typically, we embark on both morning and late afternoon sessions to capture the golden hour, sunset, and beyond. Morning outings commence before sunrise, extending into the late morning to take advantage of captivating shadow play as the sun rises higher. Flexibility is key; while the landscape remains constant, the weather, light, and atmosphere are ever-changing—rainfall, for instance, can enhance colors dramatically. Our approach prioritizes safety above all, adapting seamlessly to Mother Nature's whims.

Each day begins with a brief gathering before dawn, accompanied by coffee, refreshments, and pastries to fuel your day. We aim to have you on the water at our designated spot before sunrise. Following our morning session, typically wrapping up around 9:30 - 10:00 am, we return to The Mansion for a hearty southern-style breakfast.

After breakfast, you'll have some leisure time to unwind. Our post-production classes usually run from 12 noon to 3 p.m., followed by lunch and our afternoon/evening paddle on the water, extending until after dark. Late dinners are enjoyed at various local eateries, allowing you to savor the diverse flavors of Louisiana cuisine.

Rest assured, should nature call, we're here to assist you in reaching shore if needed—just one of the many ways we strive to ensure you have an exceptional experience.
